Il centro storico di Pisa è una sorta di quadrilatero completamente pianeggiante di circa un chilometro e mezzo di lato, ancora oggi racchiuso dalle mura risalenti al XII secolo. Il fiume Arno attraversa la città da est a ovest, dividendola in due parti note ai pisani come Tramontana, a nord, e Mezzogiorno, a sud.
